HISTORY
AND MISSION STATEMENT The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian component of Team Coast Guard. Founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves and re-designated as the Auxiliary in 1941. Today, the 33,000 volunteer men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are active on the waterways and classrooms in over 2,000 cities and towns across the nation. The Coast Guard does more than just Search and Rescue, and with the exception of direct law enforcement and military action, the Auxiliary is there, side by side, working with regular and reserve Coast Guard units, every step of the way. Each year, Auxiliarist's (folks just like you) save almost 500 lives, assist some15,000 boaters in distress, conduct more than 150,000 courtesy safety examinations of recreational vessels, and teach over 500,000 students in boating and water safety courses. The results of these efforts save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars every year.
The vision of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is to rise to meet America's changing maritime safety and security challenges while concurrently bringing to the American public an array of homeland security, recreational boating and maritime safety programs. USCG Auxiliary serves the boating public through recreational boating programs, courtesy marine examinations, marine program visitations, and public education programs in boating safety.
